Mini Digger Controls Explained: ISO vs SAE

Hop into two different diggers and the controls might feel “backwards” — that’s the difference between ISO and SAE control patterns. Knowing which you’ve got saves confusion and mistakes.

The two patterns

  • ISO controls: left joystick works the boom and slew; right works the dipper (arm) and bucket. This is the most common pattern on modern mini diggers.
  • SAE controls: the boom/dipper and slew/bucket functions are swapped between the joysticks.

Stay safe

Many machines have a switch to change between patterns — always check which mode you’re in before you start, and do a few slow test movements in a clear area. If in doubt, ask us on collection or delivery and we’ll talk you through your machine. Browse our mini diggers and request a quote for hire across Norfolk & Suffolk.
