How to Dig Out a Patio or Driveway Base with a Mini Digger

Excavating the base is the hardest part of any patio or driveway — and exactly where a mini digger earns its keep.

Digging the base

  1. Mark the area and work out your dig depth: surface thickness + sub-base + bedding.
  2. CAT-scan for services, then strip the topsoil and set it aside.
  3. Dig to an even depth, checking against your finished-level pegs as you go.
  4. Create a slight fall (around 1:60) away from buildings for drainage.
  5. Load spoil straight into a dumper or trailer to keep the site tidy.

Pair the digger with a site dumper to remove spoil, and a compactor for the sub-base. Hire the lot from Breckland Plant Hire across Norfolk & Suffolk — request a quote.
