Digging footings is one of the most common jobs a mini digger is hired for. Get them straight, level and to the right depth and the rest of the build goes smoothly.
Step by step
- Set out the footing lines with profile boards and string, and mark your dig width.
- CAT-scan the route first — never assume the ground is clear of services.
- Dig in layers, keeping the trench sides clean and vertical.
- Check depth against your datum regularly with a laser level or staff.
- Stack spoil at least a metre back from the edge so it can’t collapse in.
Tips
Match the bucket width to the footing — a 300–450mm bucket suits most strip footings. Never enter an unsupported trench. We hire mini diggers with a range of buckets, delivered across Norfolk & Suffolk. Request a quote for your groundworks.
