How to Dig Footings with a Mini Digger

Digging footings is one of the most common jobs a mini digger is hired for. Get them straight, level and to the right depth and the rest of the build goes smoothly.

Step by step

  1. Set out the footing lines with profile boards and string, and mark your dig width.
  2. CAT-scan the route first — never assume the ground is clear of services.
  3. Dig in layers, keeping the trench sides clean and vertical.
  4. Check depth against your datum regularly with a laser level or staff.
  5. Stack spoil at least a metre back from the edge so it can’t collapse in.

Tips

Match the bucket width to the footing — a 300–450mm bucket suits most strip footings. Never enter an unsupported trench. We hire mini diggers with a range of buckets, delivered across Norfolk & Suffolk. Request a quote for your groundworks.
