How to Dig a Garden Pond with a Mini Digger

A garden pond is a perfect mini digger project — what would take days by hand is done in an afternoon. Here’s how to shape a natural-looking pond.

Digging the pond

  1. Mark the outline with a hose or rope and check levels around the edge.
  2. Dig the deepest zone first, then work outwards in shelves for planting.
  3. Angle the sides gently (around 20 degrees) so they’re stable and wildlife-friendly.
  4. Keep the topsoil separate from subsoil — you’ll want the topsoil for landscaping after.
  5. Smooth the base and remove sharp stones before lining.

A 0.8–1.5t mini digger is ideal for most garden ponds and fits through a standard gateway. Hire one from our digger range, delivered across Norfolk & Suffolk or collected from Wymondham. Request a quote.
