Choosing the Right Mini Digger for Your Norfolk Project

How to match digger size to your site access, dig depth and spoil — and get it right first time.

Choosing the Right Mini Digger for Your Norfolk Project

One of the most common questions we get at our Wymondham depot is “what size digger do I actually need?” Hire too small and the job drags on; hire too big and you can’t get it through the side gate. Here’s how to get it right first time.

Match the machine to the access

Access is usually the deciding factor. Measure the narrowest point the machine has to pass through — a standard side gate is often around 750–900mm.

  • Micro diggers (0.8–1.1t): squeeze through most gateways and are ideal for gardens, footings and small drainage runs.
  • 1.5t mini diggers: the all-rounder — more reach and dig depth while still fitting most domestic sites.
  • 3t and above: for larger groundworks, foundations and bulk excavation with good access.

Think about dig depth and spoil

Check how deep you need to dig and where the spoil is going. Pairing a digger with a site dumper keeps the job moving and saves a lot of barrowing.

Not sure which to pick? Tell us about the job and we’ll recommend the right machine and have it ready, or browse our diggers and excavators. We deliver and collect within 20 miles of Wymondham across Norfolk and Suffolk, or you’re welcome to collect from the yard.
